Some recent examples of Sustainable Development projects can be found below.
Evaluability Evaluation of the Arts Education Initiative, The Ford Foundation.
OMG is current conducting an evaluation of this 11 city effort to shift arts education policy and to bring programs to scale. Prior to the launch of the evaluation, OMG conducted an evaluability study, or evaluation planning. Intending to build sustainable local partnerships and public will for policy in support of integrated arts education, the grantees are implementing strategies to strengthen multi stakeholder partnerships, and strategic communications capacities, as well as to target strengthened arts integration school programs. Program-wide and site specific theory of change work, and site evaluation plans are products of the study. In addition, the OMG team will develop a field oriented theory of change paper to advance arts education evaluation practice.
Evaluation of the Chicago Arts Education Initiative, Chicago Community Trust.
OMG is currently evaluating a five year initiative sponsored by the Chicago Community Trust to demonstrate successful approaches to deliver quality, sequential arts education in the four arts discipline in 18 k-8 classrooms. Beginning with theory of change work, the evaluation is a formative and summative evaluation using multiple methods, the work focuses on the change process and impacts of the demonstrations on the Chicago Public School system, demonstration clusters and schools, on administrators, teaching practice and students. The evaluation, also explores the impacts of and how arts and culture organizations deliver arts curriculum.
Evaluation of the Arts Education Partnership Meetings, The Arts Education Partnership.
OMG evaluated the effectiveness of the Arts Education Partnership's annual three meetings. Using interviews and an online survey, the work explored attendees' perceptions about meeting content and format, how well the meetings shared effective practice, and created network opportunities. Findings and practical recommendations made to AEP's staff and the national Steering Committee were quickly incorporated to improve future meetings.
Evaluation of the Heinz Endowment's Arts and Culture Program's Operating Support Initiative, The Heinz Endowments.
Through grantee interviews, strategic plan reviews and financial data analysis, OMG evaluated the progress of second phase of the Endowments core operating and support program for arts and culture program. Recommendations from the evaluation were incorporated into the program's redesign.
Logic Model and Plan Development, The Heinz Endowment Arts and Culture Grantmaking Program.
OMG worked with the Arts and Culture Program staff to develop a strategic logic model of their full program, and to create a plan for integrating evaluation into the ongoing work of their grantmaking program. Along with the final logic model product, the work helped to sharpen the program strategy, ground expectations for outcomes, and created conversations about outcomes thinking with the arts and culture community when the logic model was tested with them.
Evaluation of the New Jersey Aces Project (Arts Create Excellent Schools) -- a partnership between the New Jersey Department of Education, New Jersey Council for the Arts, and the New Jersey Alliance for Arts Education, New Jersey Aces Project (Arts Create Excellent Schools).
The objective of ACES is to demonstrate how the arts can be a part of the core curriculum through the support of the development of four arts-focused schools and to disseminate knowledge for replication across the state of New Jersey. The evaluation was formative and summative and relied on case studies and quantitative student-performance data.
Evaluation of ArtsEdge, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
OMG conducted an assessment of the prototype phase of ArtsEdge and subsequently evaluated the pilot phase of the program. ArtsEdge was conceived as an online resource to be used by teachers, students and arts practitioners for purposes of planning and implementing effective arts education programs and practices, linking with current education reform efforts at state and local levels. OMG assessed progress toward a more refined format, the expansion of its content and userbase, and long-range organizational planning.
The Contribution of the Arts to Excellent Education, The National Endowment for the Arts.
OMG staff conducted this study to review and assess the full range of available research evidence to support the claim that experience in the arts among school children increases scholastic performance, particularly as measured by standardized achievement tests. This project, undertaken with assistance from recognized arts education consultant Charles Fowler, resulted in a monograph for wide distribution to educators, arts professionals, legislators, and others concerned with the roles of the arts in educational reform.
Design as a Catalyst for Learning, The National Endowment for the Arts.
OMG staff studied ways that teachers used the principles and strategies of design to help students master various academic subjects and problem-solving skills. Staff conducted a national survey of teachers using design in their classrooms, and then undertook a series of in-depth profiles of schools and classrooms across the nation to document the effective use of design to improve student achievement. The book was published in 2000 by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and was recognized by the Association for Research Libraries as an Outstanding Book for 2000.
